oSTENDORF EDITORIAL

Helping clients realize their best work through meticulous fiction editing.

Hi, I’m Taylor Ostendorf!

My job is simple: I’m here to help ensure your fiction book is as ready for publication as it can possibly be. I’m an avid reader of various fantasy subgenres, my favorites being high fantasy and historical fantasy, so I’m familiar with the norms in these genres and can provide you with fine-tuned edits that guarantee your manuscript flows well, reads clearly, and engages readers so they keep coming back for more.

As for qualifications, I have a bachelor of science degree with additional credits in Linguistics. I’ve also completed multiple professional courses on editing (with Edit Republic Inc. and Proofread Anywhere, plus more to come as I continue to hone my skills over time).

I take pride in delivering my best work every time and would love the opportunity to fulfill your editing needs!

SERVICES

Bundle services (e.g., line editing + copyediting) for 10% off the total price.

LINE EDITING

$0.03 / word

This level of editing improves tone, flow, clarity, and language use. It includes:

  • Rewording awkward phrasing
  • Eliminating redundancies
  • Adjusting sentence structure
  • Refining pacing and rhythm
  • Flagging inconsistencies
  • Verifying statement accuracy
  • Preserving writer voice

Line editing does NOT address major plot or structural issues, nor does it correct technical errors.

Note: This is the only level of editing that allows for substantial rewriting of phrases, sentences, and paragraphs as needed.

COPYEDITING

$0.02 / word

This level of editing addresses mainly technical errors. It includes:

  • Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting
  • Noting repetition and awkward phrasing and offering alternatives
  • Ensuring style and content consistency (e.g., italics, ellipses)
  • Flagging continuity problems
  • Flagging potential libel or copyright issues
  • Verifying accuracy of facts with light to moderate fact-checking
  • Creating a style guide

Copyediting does NOT address major plot or structural issues, nor does it allow for rewriting of more than a word here and there.

PROOFREADING

$0.01 / word

This level of editing is a final check for documents that are almost ready for submission or publication. It includes:

  • Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting
  • Ensuring consistency of names, dates, numbers, etc.
  • Verifying accuracy of obvious facts (e.g., “The dog is brown.”)
  • Following style guides

Proofreading does NOT address major plot or structural issues, nor does it correct technical errors on more than a surface level.

Process

  • Fill out the contact form at the bottom of the page.
  • I’ll reach out to you by email within 48 hours. We’ll either continue to exchange emails or hop on a phone call (your choice!) to discuss your project needs, objectives, timeline, and budget. I’ll do a free sample edit on 1,000 words of your manuscript so you get an idea of the quality of my editing, and so I can ensure I’ll be able to adequately provide the services your project needs.
  • If we’re a good match, I’ll send you a contract to sign, along with a small questionnaire for you to fill out that will help me edit to your preferences (e.g., Yay or nay on using the Oxford comma? How do you want numbers formatted?). You’ll pay a deposit, and we’ll refine any last details.
  • I’ll get to work, keeping you updated every step of the way!
  • You’ll receive two copies of your edited manuscript: one displaying every change and comment I’ve made, and a second copy with my changes applied but the comments still visible. That way, you can easily find and address any issues.
  • I absolutely recommend her!

“Working with Taylor brought my manuscripts to a polished level that not only strengthened my novels for readers, but also improved my own writing craft by highlighting areas of weakness in both plot and technical execution. She was prompt, communicative, and thorough in her edits, even offering broader suggestions that helped me grow as a writer. I am already looking forward to working with her on my next manuscript. I highly recommend Taylor for your editing needs.”

  • Very pleased!

“Taylor did the copy editing on a manuscript for me, and the sheer amount of corrections she found staggered me. Her professionalism, meticulousness, and the quality of her work cannot be overstated.”

Frequently Asked Questions

My specialties are high fantasy and historical fantasy, although any fantasy subgenre is sure to snag my interest. I also dabble in science fiction from time to time and am open to other genres, as well.

Please see my Services section for an overview of what each level of editing entails. If you’re still unsure which service(s) to request, feel free to contact me; I’ll take a look at your manuscript and help you determine how much editing is needed.

I’ll gladly edit 1,000 words of your project at no cost so you have an idea of the quality of my editing and so I can ensure I’ll be able to adequately provide the services your project needs. I’ll edit a portion of your choosing from the middle of the manuscript, as both the beginning and end tend to be self-edited much more thoroughly with fewer corrections needed.

This depends on various factors that we’ll discuss before I accept your project, but generally I will have edits completed within 2-4 weeks of manuscript delivery. If you need a project back within one week, a rush fee of 25% of the total project cost will be added as this requires me to put other responsibilities on hold so I can finish by the deadline.

I work primarily in Microsoft Word and accept .doc or .docx files. If you’d like to discuss other options, I’m happy to do so.

Yes, I require that 50% of the total project cost be paid before beginning any work. If this isn’t feasible for you, please let me know and we can discuss options on a case-by-case basis.

Absolutely! I love these types of scenes and am very skilled at making sure no one ends up with, say, three arms.

Not at this time, but check back soon!

If you’re not satisfied with the results, I’ll revise my delivered work once at no extra cost. Additional revisions will start at 50% of the total project cost.
