Once your manuscript has been through all other levels of editing, it’s time for one last polish. Proofreading is a final, surface-level check for manuscripts that are almost ready for publication and includes:
- Correcting spelling, grammar, punctuation, and formatting
- Ensuring consistency of names, dates, numbers, etc.
- Verifying accuracy of obvious facts (e.g., “The dog is brown.”)
Proofreading does not address major plot or structural issues (this should have been done during a developmental edit), nor does it correct mechanical errors on more than a surface level (a deeper edit would have been done during a line edit and copyedit).
I do not format manuscripts for publication, as formatting is its own service, but I do check that those already formatted are correct and consistent. Most clients first have me do a proofread in Microsoft Word, which is my primary program. Afterward, you confirm any corrections and have your manuscript formatted, then send it back to me as a PDF for a second proofread in Adobe Acrobat to ensure no new errors were introduced during this process. The second proofread is significantly faster since, ideally, everything is as clean as possible by this point.

How quickly you get it:
- Generally 1-2 weeks after manuscript delivery.
- I will determine how soon I can get your manuscript back to you after I’ve completed a sample edit. If you need a project back before the date I provide, a rush fee of 20% of the total project cost will be added as this requires me to put other responsibilities on hold so I can finish by the deadline.
How much it costs:
- Pricing starts at $0.005 per word.
- For an 80,000 word manuscript, the total project cost can range between $500 and $700. This accounts for word count, editing complexity, and turnaround time.
- Payment plans are available and encouraged!
